I’ve written before about the dangers of overly focusing community engagement.
Here’s one way to look at it too.
Businesses love the idea of conversations happening around them.
“Free marketing” they think and say.
But too many conversations without action weigh us down. Nobody wants to keep talking forever, they want to see action taken.
I often refer to this as the Town Hall analogy—no one wants to keep showing up at the local town hall talking about things that are important to them that haven’t been actioned. They just want to see things actioned.
So when you see a conversation, ask yourself:
what action can I take on this?
what does this conversation mean?
how can we make sure these people feel heard?
how will we communicate the actions we make happen?
how does this help us build a better community?
