One thing that I’ve been reflecting upon is: what are community conversations? Or even better, what makes good community conversation?
As I’ve been thinking about conversation in relation to community I’ve felt it is important to move away from the idea that conversation is simply people talking to each other.
I’m fascinated by the world of async, of memes, emoji expressions, TikToks that contribute to a trending them. These are all modern ways to have conversations.
To have good conversations we need to listen. Not everyone participates when there are multiple people involved in what is communicated. Sometimes listening is enough and we may jump in hours, days, weeks or even years later. We are still part of the conversation.
We can also support with modern conversations through liking and sharing too. This is one way to say “I agree”, or “I support” or “I identify with this too”. In this sense, a social post, a newsletter or any kind of piece of content is part of the conversation that people can process. Them taking the time to listen and consume is a contribution.
Infact part of me thinks that good communication that encourages interaction is a thing to focus on as an over arching theme. Conversations that are communicated well are good community conversations.
