I recently shared about the concept of passing the mic.
What I can do better is to recommend others for these opportunities when I am presented with them myself. Especially those in underrepresented communities who often get ignored or passed on. So one thing I am going to hold myself accountable is when I put myself out there for speaking opportunities is to also recommend 3-5 people to help ensure that we're creating a fair and equitable space.
What’s also interesting is that we inspire and bring in different perspectives when we start to share and speak up about these things.
🔦 The Community Torch
One such similar but different perspective on passing the mic is The Community Torch, this one comes from Simon Tomes where he shared in Rosieland:
I see community folks sharing the concept of "passing the mic" again. Love it!
I decided to interpret my own version: The Community Torch. 🔦
As community professionals, we hold a large torch. And it's up to us to shine a light on folks accordingly. We can change the warmth of the colour. We can modify the intensity of the light. We can make the beam narrow or wide. The Community Torch is a powerful tool.
Who in your community can you shine the torch on today? Just remember to adjust accordingly.
