Assumptions are everywhere.
Our understanding of humans, needs, abilities, privileges, preferences and accessibility change year on year.
Our understanding of community needs change too. We should know community tools are not just forums and chat spaces. Any tool that empowers and helps us to communicates counts as a community tool for me.
When we think of how community is defined in tech, we can then also think about how we consider how people want or are able to be involved. The more we think about it, the more we will realise that itβs unreasonable to throw people into an overwhelming community chat space and expect people to get excited about it.
Ask them how they would like to show up and ensure there are options to choose from.
I love this from How to Citizenβs onboarding. It feels like it respects me as a person and also where I am in my life. It shows me that I have options and there is no pressure (which often leads to guilt) to give more than I am able to.
How can you recreate the equivalent in your onboarding flow?
